Nonetheless, a notable transformation has occurred in player attitudes and perceptions. While the atmosphere surrounding pickleball was once characterized by collegiality and inclusivity, there has been an observable shift. This shift tends to be towards increased competitiveness and social segmentation on some courts. This trend is becoming increasingly prominent and warrants thoughtful consideration moving forward.

A players DUPR score, which were originally intended to serve as a helpful resource for competition now functions similarly to social credit scores. Individuals often select partners with an emphasis on numerical ratings, sometimes expressing concerns for someone who has a lower DUPR than them.
Comments regarding player placement on specific courts have become more common, despite the recreational origins of the game. Notably, some individuals who exhibit exclusivity are mid-level players who demonstrate limited humility. Conversely, many players with lower ratings, such as those at the 3.0 level, consistently display enthusiasm for learning, provide encouragement, and contribute positively to the community. It is important to recognize that fostering a positive pickleball environment relies on the attitudes and actions of participants, rather than on ratings or equipment.
Pickleball is an inclusive sport, open to all individuals who have a genuine appreciation for the game. Regardless of skill level or experience, everyone should be able to play without judgement. The most successful Pickleball communities foster a sense of camaraderie, encouraging mutual support among players. We all should provide a welcoming environment for beginners. We should rotate partners regularly and maintaining recreational play as enjoyable rather than competitive. The foundation of this sport lies not in ratings, equipment, or highlight reels, but in a commitment to engaging participants of all levels and promoting enjoyment throughout the community.
